“I started out on an Optimist in 2001. At around 9-10 years of age, I was lucky enough to do a transatlantic crossing with my parents.”
As an adolescent, Loïs juggled sailing and schooling. “I continued to sail with a view to competing in the Olympics because, back then, there was a catamaran event (Tornado) in the Games.” With his heart set on this goal, the Tornado was subsequently withdrawn from the International Sailing Federation’s programme, but Loïs was not discouraged. Instead, he switched his career focus to other sports catamarans and the Formula 18 category in particular.
“Growing up, I got more and more into offshore racing. My first transatlantic in Class40, in 2017, in the Quebec Saint-Malo, proved to be the catalyst!” Loïs got in touch with the Pôle Finistère Course au Large offshore training hub. He signed up for the Challenge Espoir (CMB) and finished 2nd. That same year, he met Erwan Le Draoulec with whom he competed in the Transat AG2R LA MONDIALE on a Figaro 2.
In 2018, Christian Le Pape, the then director of the Pôle Finistère Course au Large, offered him the chance to take the helm of the Espoir boat (CMB) for young racing hopefuls and complete the Figaro season with her. “From a professional and technical standpoint, it was the perfect way to get to grips with singlehanded sailing and the Figaro.”
In 2018, 2019 and 2020, Loïs took part in the Solitaire du Figaro.
In 2021, he turned his attention from the prestigious race to a double-handed race programme embracing both Figaro and Imoca.
In 2022, he was selected by MACIF and joined Erwan Le Draoulec, the Skipper Macif 2020. After a great Solitaire du Figaro, his first flying the flag of MACIF, Loïs Berrehar finished 11th in the overall ranking for the French Offshore Racing Championship.
For 2023, he has teamed up with Romain Attanasio for the Défi Azimut and Transat Jacques Vabre.
“These boats are inspirational, beams Loïs. Romain’s has real potential. She has what it takes to sail a good race and do battle with the top half of the leader board.”
